The Pre-Licensing Home Inspection Essentials Online Course is an introduction to home inspection, covering everything you will need to start and operate your successful home inspection career. Discover how to perform home inspections following the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) Standard of Practice and Code of Ethics.

The Pre-Licensing Home Inspection Essentials course covers a wide range of topics. It prepares learners for everything from inspecting appliances to determining fireplace clearances to effective report writing. As you advance through the program, you will gain intensive knowledge of your responsibilities as a home inspector through targeted lessons, a combination of audio and video instruction, and interactive activities. This online course does not include In-Field Training.

The Illinois-approved Home Inspection Essentials online course includes 5 Field training events with an experienced IL ASHI Certified Inspector. Students will practice inspection methods while gaining valuable insight into home construction, home systems integration, and defect recognition. Students will also practice reporting their inspection findings to potential clients in a home inspection report with a clear and concise narrative. Field event training is two and a half days of training, which should be scheduled after the completion of the course.

Montana Ordinance & Contacts

A Home Inspector, whether as an individual, partnership, corporation, or manager-managed or member-managed limited liability company, shall register with the Department by completing an application, paying the $80 application fee, and shall document that each person working under the registration as a home inspector:

1. Has successfully completed 40 hours of comprehensive home inspection instruction  or  has passed a Department approved national examination.
2. Is a member of a national home inspector association.
3. Is covered by a minimum of $100,000 general commercial liability insurance, and a minimum of $100,000 errors and omissions insurance.
4. Is covered under a workers’ compensation policy or has an independent contractor exemption certificate (ICEC) for the occupation of home inspection.

The statutes governing Home Inspector Registration can be found at Contractor Registration Laws 39.9.101 - 39.9.401

Montana issues registration numbers however, does not issue licenses to applicants. Montana does not require a business license, however the applicant must be workers’ comp compliant in the state of Montana. Montana accepts National Home Inspector Exam for registration as well as proof of having completed a comprehensive home inspection instruction course, which are listed on the website.
